What is TOML?

TOML (Tom's Obvious Minimal Language) is a minimal configuration file format that's easy to read due to its obvious semantics. Created by Tom Preston-Werner, TOML is designed to map unambiguously to a hash table and is used by projects like Rust's Cargo, Python's pip, and Hugo static site generator.

TOML Features

Key-Value Pairs

Simple key = value syntax for basic types

Tables (Sections)

Organize configuration with [section] headers

Arrays & Inline Tables

Support for arrays, nested tables, and inline table syntax

Frequently Asked Questions

What types does TOML support?

TOML supports strings, integers, floats, booleans, datetime, arrays, and tables (hash maps). It also supports inline tables and multiline strings.

How is TOML different from JSON or YAML?

TOML is designed specifically for configuration files. Unlike JSON, it supports comments and is more human-readable. Unlike YAML, it has a stricter and simpler grammar, making it less prone to parsing errors.

Is this tool safe to use with sensitive data?

Yes! All parsing is done entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server, so your configuration files remain completely private.

How do TOML tables and arrays of tables work?

[server] opens a table; [server.tls] nests one inside it; and [[products]] starts an array of tables, where each repeated [[products]] header appends a new element - the idiom for lists of records in configuration files. Indentation is cosmetic; the bracket headers define the structure.

How does TOML handle dates and times?

TOML 1.0 has four temporal types: offset date-time (1979-05-27T07:32:00Z, RFC 3339 format), local date-time with no offset, local date (1979-05-27), and local time (07:32:00). Timestamps are first-class values - no quoting, no string parsing - which removes a whole class of configuration bugs that string dates cause in JSON or YAML.

Why choose TOML over INI or JSON for configuration?

Against INI: TOML has a real specification, typed values (integers, floats, booleans, dates, arrays), and clean nesting instead of dotted-key conventions. Against JSON: comments, multi-line strings, and no trailing-comma pitfalls. JSON remains better for data interchange between programs; TOML aims squarely at human-written configuration.

Which ecosystems use TOML?

Rust's Cargo (Cargo.toml) made it famous; Python standardized on it for build configuration (pyproject.toml, PEP 518); and it appears in Hugo, Netlify, and many CI systems. The format is maintained by the toml-lang organization with a conformance test suite - one reason parsers agree across languages.

How do multi-line and literal strings work in TOML?

Triple double quotes span lines with real newlines and support line-ending backslashes that trim whitespace; triple single quotes do the same with no escape processing at all. Single-quoted literal strings also skip escapes entirely - ideal for Windows paths (C:\Users\name) and regex patterns that would otherwise need every backslash doubled.
